The International Year of Caves and Karst is a worldwide project to teach everyone about these critically important and widespread natural resources. It is organized by the International Union of Speleology (UIS), organization for the exploration, study, and protection of caves and karst, comprised of 55 member countries. Over 100 national and international organizations are UIS partners in the IYCK, creating educational but also fun opportunities to raise global awareness on caves and carst.
Geographical Institute „Jovan Cvijić“ of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts supported this UIS project at the Scientific Council session in July 2019. In January 2020 the Institute officially asked the Commission of the Republic of Serbia for UNESCO to support the IYCK Opening Ceremony in the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, and got the positive response. Only four countries in the world managed to provide the support from their national commissions (apart from Serbia, these are Slovenia, Lebanon and Hungary), but luckily it was enough for the approval of the request. Previously scheduled for January 26th, 2021, the Opening Ceremony in Paris had to be re-scheduled for a later date, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In order to formally announce the official start of the IYCK, the UIS organized the on-line event on its YouTube channel. The activities of various kinds will be organized throughout the year and continued in future.
